WP XP PRO SP2 restart messes up BIOS settings

Hey guys, I have had this intermittent problem off and on for several months
but am now just getting around to actually figuring out what the cause of
the problem might be and how to correct it. When I attempt to restart/reboot
my system after a software update, upon bootup I have my Sony DVD device
changed to something of the following: "rony ______DVD___RW !! DRU-720A" ??
The correct value should be "Sony DVD RW DRU-720A"! This fanageling leads
me to believe that something might be wrong with my current BIOS firmware.

I started to snoop around and found out that the registry is dirty with
prior CD/DVD's that I had previously installed and no longer possess,
including several entries for my current drive? An it appears that you can't
just delete these entries from the registry!??

In the past I could usually get into the recovery console of XP and issue a
FIXMBR to repair the boot sector and be on my way. I tried this again with
this problem and it did not fix the problem. This is just a temporary fix
that I now want to permanently resolve.

MY SYSTEM :
BIOS = Phoenix Technologies LTD (Award (08/02/04)
VER = 6.00PG

MotherBoard = Micro-STAR MSI K7N2 Delta-L (MS-6570G)
MB Chipset = nVidia nForce2 Ultra 400

Processor = AMD Athlon XP-A 2079 MHz(12.5x166) 2800+

Is your system overclocked in some manner?
Is something sharing an IRQ with the video card?
It would appear that windows has nothing to do with the problem if the error
is occurring in the BIOS start up screen display.
Does the DVD drive have update firmware?
Is the drive running in UDMA 2 or 4, or PIO mode in windows?
Are you using additional drivers from Roxio or Nero?

Thanks Chuck for the quick response. I'll try to answer to the best of my
knowledge.
1) Is your system overclocked in some manner?
A: No, I checked my BIOS and it is set to the factory 133MHz. It can be
raised all the way to 266MHz

2) Is something sharing an IRQ with the video card?
A: I found one that is sharing with my nVidia GForce video card currently
sharing The following is a short picture all IRQ's on my system:

I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 PCI bus
I/O Port 0x00000000-0x00000CF7 Direct memory access controller

I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge
I/O Port 0x000003C0-0x000003DF NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (Microsoft
Corporation)

IRQ 20 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
IRQ 20 Realtek AC'97 Audio

Memory Address 0xD8000000-0xE7FFFFFF NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge
Memory Address 0xD8000000-0xE7FFFFFF NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (Microsoft

Memory Address 0xE8000000-0xE9FFFFFF NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge
Memory Address 0xE8000000-0xE9FFFFFF NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (Microsoft

IRQ 22 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
IRQ 22 NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Controller #2

I/O Port 0x00009000-0x0000AFFF PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
I/O Port 0x00009000-0x0000AFFF Hayes V.92 PCI Voice Faxmodem

IRQ 19 Hayes V.92 PCI Voice Faxmodem <<<--------------------------
IRQ 19 NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (Microsoft Corporation)
<<<------------------

Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF PCI bus
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge
Memory Address 0xA0000-0xBFFFF NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (Microsoft

I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB NVIDIA nForce2 AGP Host to PCI Bridge
I/O Port 0x000003B0-0x000003BB NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (Microsoft

3) It would appear that windows has nothing to do with the problem if the
error
is occurring in the BIOS start up screen display.
A: I just presumed that the reboot process was doing something slightly
different than turning on the machine and booting.
Something always seems to compromise the setting of this device
exclusively This device is currently on the second
IDE primary channel.

4) Does the DVD drive have update firmware?
A: I have downloaded the latest firmware, but I haven't taken the
opportunity to install until today.

5) Is the drive running in UDMA 2 or 4, or PIO mode in windows?
A: I have never altered these values in the BIOS. They all are set to
AUTO for the PIO and the UDMA on IDE channel
1 & 2

6) Are you using additional drivers from Roxio or Nero?
A: I have recently download Nero 6 Ultra update edition and all of the
bells and whistles software that goes along with it.
I also chose InCD to handle the basic copy/move functions for
windows. I have created several CD/DVD's since
installing this product w/o a glitch.

I had the rare opportunity this morning to have access to the DVD drive, so
I applied the latest firmware upgrade to the device. But my bliss didn't
last because when the end of software asked me to Reboot, I hit the yes
button. I'm back in the same position again. I think my next move will be to
open up the box and disconnect the device altogether, boot the system and
reattach the drive to see if that makes a difference. I'll tell you how I
make out.
Thanks again . . .Tom J.
