Wowexec general protection fault error message

Does anyone know cause / fix for this error message ? The message appears
during boot up.

"WOWEXEC caused a General Protection Fault in module MMSYSTEM.DLL at
000A:0032. Choose Close. WOWEXEC will close.

You either have a 16-bit application trying to start at boot or you have
spyware or a virus.

wowexec.exe is used in conjuction with ntvdm.exe to run old DOS
applications.

There is normally no reason for wowexec.exe trying to start at boot.

Scan for spyware and viruses.
