My Vista laptop recently gave me "This application has failed to start
because wow64cpu.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix
this problem"

Does anyone know what this is, and what a fix may be?

Thank you

Wow64cpu.dll is a 17KB file that resides in the windows\
system32 directory of 64 bit Vista. Did you look to see if
you have that file?

I have successfully resolved this issue. In this isolated case, it turned
out to be a bad stick of RAM. The bad RAM resulted in catastrophic program
failures as well as memory corruption on the hard disk which no doubt lead to
all the symptoms including this one.

The laptop in question is a Core 2 Duo setup and uses the x64 architecture
which should not require wow64cpu.dll (see here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384274.aspx ). An attempt to
restore the system failed, as did the OS reinstall (HP recovery). In each
case the system would blue screen and restart.

Memtest86+ showed steady errors. Two new sticks of RAM and the system
passed the tests. Reinstalled Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate Edition and the
system is working fine.
