I agree that first and foremost my job is to keep the system up and running.
However here, if that means that I need to sit and review with a call center
rep how to total a column in Excel, then the next call is to assist another
user with a network connectivity issue, and the next is figuring out why a
crystal report that hits a view written against an oracle table and pulls
data from a sql database and compares the two blewup, then that is what I do.
All day long every day. The next day I could be pulling cable through
cubicles. The next day I could be analyizing the outage management system to
see why it went wonky.
We manage to do all this with a great deal of grace and humor and without
treating our end users as the enemy. As I said, if not for them I would be
unemployed.
