WOW ati video card resetting

While playing the best video game ever created, World of Warcraft, my screen
locks up for a few seconds, turns black for a few more and then is fine
again. Every few times this happens, it then becomes worse and then gives me
an error message, which reads: "Vpu recover was unable to fully recover from
a hardware deadlock and has switched to software rendering. To restore
hardware rendering you must restart your computer. Do you want to restart
now?" It seems that most of the time the vpu recover thing resets the video
card but sometimes it cant and I must restart. I contacted blizzard customer
service and they directed me to this link:
http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/3968.html. I have no idea what anything
on this page means ecspecially the bios info, which i cant find on my
computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running windows xp, ATI radeon 8500 series video card.

Hi Jim,

I looked at that link that ATI gave you to follow.
You should be able to follow most of that with our help.

Get started on it, and when you run into a question or a problem,
post back and we'll pitch in and help you from there. Sound good? :)

Hey, thanks for responding I appreciate the help. Since my last post I went
to gateway for some help, and followed some useless suggestions. One being
that i download their drivers instead of ati's ... this made things worse as
now the system lockes up without prompting me to restart and I have to cut
power to get the machine to restart. So my first question is "do i rollback
to the previous drivers i downloaded from ati's site?" I was able to Ensure
that all three DirectX Features were enabled. Moving on to step 1. c) I cant
figure out who the motherboard manufacturer is. Can you tell me how to find
that info on my machine?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Traderjim,

To Rollback your driver click the "ROLL BACK DRIVER" button:
To get to the button Click Start / Control Panel
Click on System
Click on the HARDWARE Tab
Click the DEVICE MANAGER button
Expand the Display Adapters
Double Click on your Display adapter listed there
Click on the Driver Tab

That was easy, right? :)

For info about your system (Motherboard, Chipset drivers, etc.)

Ok I have completed steps a through d. I retested the game and its back the
way it was prior to trying anything. I also noticed that even outside the
game I occassionally get a blinking when working on the computer even just
the desktop (no programs) The screen turns black for just a second or two and
then returns fine. Perhaps this is a clue. I attempted to do step e,
however intels website states that it no longer will provide assistance or
bios updates for my board.
step f) my power supply is fine.

Section 2 is for bios settings and I dont know how to access these on my
computer.

Hi Jim,

Are you no longer getting the Infinite Loop or VPU Recover errors?

Cheers,

Well I am not sure.... it still blinks in and out and the screen broke up
into a bunch of triangles that distorted the picture a couple of times but I
havent seen the vpu recovery error yet. I suppose I would have to play it
for awhile to find out. I will try it again and let you know.

It is no better then before i attempted to fix anything. After playing for
about 5 minutes I received the original error message that states "VPU
recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to
graphics driver commands"

thanks for your attention anyways though

Hi Jim,

I think it's time to have the hardware looked at by a technician.
Hopefully, the computer is under warranty still.
