Would you buy a printer from this company?

Hence it is okay to buy products made with slave labor or from
companies headed by criminal management teams???

I think not.

Which is to say, we should be just as concerned about the ethics
of our lawmakers as we are about corporate management. We need
to be sure both that the appropriate laws are in place and that
they are being followed.

Neither can be ignored.
You seem to not want to differntiate companies acting legally from those
that do not.

Apparently he lacks any ethical base himself... (I wish a
smiley were appropriate at this point, unfortunately nothing
stated above seems to indicate so.)
I don't see why I should buy products from companies that act illegally,
regardless of the quality of their products.
Exactly!

I've not yet seen any significant evidence that the oil companies are
acting illegally. The illegal actions of HP in this case are much
clearer.

Whoa! (Okay, so you probably have very little exposure to oil
companies, and therefore simply would not be aware.)

The FBI recently raided the offices of a number of politicians
and of certain oil company contractors in Alaska. While we do
not have specifics, there is little doubt that it is a criminal
investigation into influence buying by the oil industry.

That happens at the same time that major problems exist on the
North Slope with oil production due to management that either is
or should be illegal. If it is not illegal, then the reasons
that no such laws exist *are* illegal!

Further, I know of at least one private law suit against all of
the oil producers at Prudhoe Bay that amounts to something like
a $50 million payout for illegal trespass. My understanding is
that this is about to be settled and probably will be made
public, though I doubt it will get the headlines is deserves.
It amounts to 30 years of criminal behavior...

Suffice to say that the oil industry is *much* more likely to
get away with criminal and/or unethical behavior than any other
industry in the world, simply because they have the money to
finance whatever to takes to make a profit.
Of course you can approach this any way you want to, as can I. I
personally think it is a great thing when the market punishes companies
that act illegally and unethically. This is the free market at work.

Excellent point!

I'm not sure why you mentioned this, who could argue?

Some people feel no pressure from "personal integrity". That
apparently is not limited to company management... :-(

So, if I understand it, your main complaint is
they are snobs? How about their products?
No idea, just being facetious!
Last time I used HP products was in the 1980s,
they were the Gold Standard for test equipment then.
