Would welcome suggestions for a new video card..........

Eve Giidiion

I've seen much hype about the Amd x2 CPU's and I plan on buying one in
the next few months.
I'd like a 4800 or 5000 mhz X2 if I can afford one.
I'm not current on the video cards. I'd like one based on the Nvida
chip rather then ATI. I doubt that I'd do the two vid card in SLI(?)
but I guess it is possible.
My experience has always been that by the time the prices have come
down enough to upgrade (a CPU, or whatever) everything else is
obsolete or the piece will not work with what I have so I have to buy
everything new. I think all my MB have had ZIFF sockets, but I have
never upgraded a CPU.

That being said, I'd like a Vid Card in the $200 - $300 range.
My #1 use for the computer is tied between game play and watching
movies ( I'd like to edit some when I get a new CPU.)

So, any suggestions? And being able to run Duel monitors would be
nice.

The nVidia GF7900GTO is now at $300 or less. That is the top
card on the market. Only problem with that card is the fan noise.
It is really noisy. There are replacement fans that will reduce that
noise a lot, but they are tricky to install. If you are getting an X2
for gaming, a top card is worth having, and maybe even paying
someone to install a quiet cooler. The 7800s are equally noisy.
That might tempt you to get a low power 6800 ... don't. The
6800 is a crippled card, and a very poor game card.

Right now,I don't think the dual core cpu's offer anything for gamers.Cool
to have though. Look into the AMD FX or Opteron series of chips .Single
cores can be faster than dual and cost less.
Anything in the Nvidia 7900 series will be around $250-$500.

I don't like promoting a merchant that seems to have little
competition, but if I were you I would buy a video card from NewEgg.
I did a ton of window shopping two months ago for a video card, and
NewEgg has a huge selection of video cards for less money than other
merchants. You can get a very fast card in the $200 - $300 range. I
would go with NVIDIA over ATI, again also noting the fact NVIDIA is
dominant.

Good luck and have fun.

By the way, there are two large videocard groups here on USENET, one
for ATI and the other for NVIDIA, maybe after your choices are
narrowed and you have specific questions.

I think most do (including the card I recently bought for $140), and
they work well in Windows XP. Some of them have two DVI
connectors and some have one VGA and one DVI connector. If you buy a
card with two DVI connectors, make sure the accessories include two
DVI to VGA adapters if you have two VGA monitors. NewEgg displays
the accessories. Good luck.

Note: there are NO 4800 or 5000 MHz CPU's on the market by AMD or Intel.
You are several years early.

You lost me here Dave...I need a little more clarification.[/QUOTE]

I've reconstructed the discussion, maybe that will help.

I understand, but I don't believe you did.

My problem was with Davew saying "there are NO 4800 or 5000 MHz CPU's
on the market". I would disagree with this and I wanted him to
explain to me why he felt I couldn't buy one?
I know I can place an order for both of the chips now.

What is not clear is some implied meaning in posts. I find it
difficult to tell if someone is being derisive and flip, or trying to
just be helpful. I think if you had followed your last post to me
with an emotion icon, I would have understood you a little better.
But, I realize that is just me, and you cannot expect a guy to do
that.

I suspect you mean an Athlon 64 x2 am2 4800 and/or 5000 but those are not
4800Mhz nor 5000Mhz. That's the 'performance rating'. The actual clock
speeds are 2.4GHz and 2.6GHz, respectively.

David Maynard:::

Thank you for pointing out my error and explaining it clearly,
rather then giving me the "hheee heeee Hee She said 5000mhz. Hee
hee." (my poor Bevis and Butthead imitation.
Sometimes I forget I may be dealing with a 4th grader or a 4th year
grad student.
What an embarrassing faux pas I have made.

But, thank you once again for elucidating the problem.
And it had nothing to do with where I posted.

Like your reply that has no context and consists entirely of:
"You lost me here Dave...I need a little more clarification"

That is exceptionally vague.

If you have trouble with understanding, heed my prior advice and
post in context instead of top posting. It's no big deal for casual
conversation, but it makes much difference when seeking technical
help.
I find it
difficult to tell if someone is being derisive and flip, or trying

Your conclusion is incorrect, I am serious.

Where you post does matter. What text you post under matters too.

Since you're using Forte Agent, you can do it.
But, I realize that is just me, and you cannot expect a guy to do
that.

Not all females are so technically handicapped.

You're welcome, and I know what you mean. Sometimes seems like too many use
newsgroups as some kind of ego therapy.
Sometimes I forget I may be dealing with a 4th grader or a 4th year
grad student.

It's a pretty common misconception and not really surprising because that's
what it's supposedly 'equivalent to', in performance, so it's naturally
going to look similar, or else 'the message' wouldn't get across.
Unfortunately, simply 'MHz' isn't a very good comparison measure between
dissimilar processors but that's another story.

You are the most persistent/obvious foulmouthed troll I have run
into on USENET.

By the way. If you're a guy, why do you call yourself Shannon?

But you didn't predict that.

"Shannon - (SHAN-ohn) ... Rarely, if ever, used as a name in
Ireland."

I hope you do understand English well enough to know that means it
might never have been used as a male's name.

You will have to do better than that.

try again shitwit, who said i was in ireland?
