Im 90% sure that I have a worm on my computer, the only thing I can
access is the internet, everything else (all applictions, right
clicking, my control panel, my computer etc.) dont work, All I can
access is My computer >> Manage, from right clicking (some things
right click, however not everything on the list does) Ive been onsafe
mode and control panel does not work there either. What do I do?

Ive read about creating new users but how can I do that if I cnt
access c.panel?
Also 'run' on the start button does not work, when I try to run any
application 'This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action. Create an association folder in the Folder
Options control panel' appears, I get this message on every exe I try
to run.

Would reinstalling windows help?

Please help.

Sounds more like the file association is kaput rather than a worm.
Try the "EXE file association fix" at this link.
http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
You may need to run more that just that one fix but start off with that one
first.
Click on it and select "open".
Good luck!

AFAIK, the Panda Software "Free Active Scan" is indeed free, as are
other online virus scans such as:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp - TrendMicro
online scanner
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx - Computer
Associates
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml - F-Secure
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp - McAfee online scanner

If you are getting some sort of message that you need to pay before
malware will be removed, perhaps that message is from malware on your
computer. Make sure your machine is clean:

Note that none of the tools mentioned at that site cost anything.

I went to a web site that is known for giving out spyware,I run Xoftspy and
Ad-aware every morning so I don't have many spyware on my system. I went back
to "panda software" and rescanned FREE and came up with 3 spywares, when I
clicked on the" Disinfection Advice" note I came to a page that told me for
$49.95 with 30 days free trial that my spyware can be removed.

Like most other free online scans, Panda Active Scan will find and remove
most viruses/Trojans but it will only /identify/ hijackware. It's up to you
to find a way to remove it if you choose not to purchase Active Scan.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Thank you for clarifying that. I went to the Panda site and saw that
they were offering a free scan, but since I don't run Windows on this
machine I couldn't try it out. I'll remove them from my suggested
online virus scan sites.

I actually don't recommend online virus scanners unless one just wants a
"second opinion" since malware tends to be active in Regular Mode and
particularly on line.

Since you're not the OP, I'm assuming that you don't have any malware
problems and were just passing on the information about Panda. You
might want to take a look at this site by MVP and security expert Eric
Howes, though. It lists "rogue" antispyware programs - programs that
purport to be Good Guys but which are really Evil. Xoftspy was rogue
but has been delisted for the reasons Eric states. Personally, I
wouldn't use it when there are other untainted choices.

Thanks again for the info re Panda active scan.

Thanks for your info,I went to spywarewarrior.com and I am happy to see that
someone is trying to help the less informed computer user. I will pass the
web site info to all my friends. Thanks again.

See my reply in this thread. Few, if any, free online scans will /remove/
hijackware; Most of them will remove viruses/Trojans.

Active Scan, Kasperky Online Scan, etc., remain useful tools when diagnosing
hijackware infections. It will identify any suspicious files that it
couldn't (i.e., won't) "disinfect" in its Report (user must opt to see and
save the Report). We can then remove the files manually and address
anything related to the files which remain in a HJT log.
