worm/virus closing anti-virus apps ???

Hi!

I am having strange effects on a WINDOWS XP Home machine,
Norton Anitivurs gets terminated soon after startup, also AntiVir Personal
Edition.
when I start the registry editor, it also closes after a few seconds.
some keys on the keybaord produce different values, e.g. "v" produces a "1"
....

I did a full scan with AntiVir in safe mode and it didnt find any
worm/virus.

any help on how to get rid of this, would be greatly appreciated,
thanx in advance!

best regards,
Hans

The Agobot virus and MANY others have been programmed to terminate many
popular Antivirus programs. I use VET anti virus made by Computer
Associates and have always been able to remove them. Perhaps have a look
at the VET web site - www.vet.com.au and then click the link to search
for virus information. Computer Associates release many removal tools
that may help you. Other than that I'd be comtemplating the purchase of
a decent antivirus program (not Norton!) and running that. You're right
to run the scan in safe mode, but your scanner should detect and remove
the virus. Is Norton up to date?

Turn off system restore, instructions here:
http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml

Then I would run at least two
of these
free online virus scan programs,

RAV
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php

Then I would download and run
the 30 day free trial of TrojanHunter from
http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/

After you are sure the machine is clean download
and install SpywareBlaster to help keep it that way

AntiVir Personal Edition found the Agobot worm and removed it.
I also downloaded the FxGaobot.exe removal tool form symantec and it also
found some worms and removed them.

after this AntiVir didnt find any viruses/worms anymore but still the system
behaves VERY strange,
with the effects that I described.

I cant run a NAV liveupdate because the virus/worm/spyware always shuts it
down ...

Go to the Symantec and use the Intelligent Updater feature. You can just
pick you system and choose download and then just choose Open and it should
give you the latest definitions and install them. I used to save the dl and
then doubleclick on it to install it, but then I had to go back and delete
it later. Now, I just choose to dl and Open and it is done.
I'm sure you can find out more info on how to fix your problem on the
Symantec site.
Sometimes it is just easier to uninstall and reinstall Norton.
