worksheet trouble

Hi, I have a worksheet for counting working hours. In one coloumn I have
"Work" og "Freetime". One for each day on the calender. can I sum the numbers
of "Work" and Freetime"? If it is Work...I have to add 8 hours of work to my
time,, but if it is "Free" I have to (-) 8 hours. It is for seeing how many
hours I have in rest.
 
What you have described doesn't work. for example in 30 days if you work 15
and have 15 free the result of the logic below gives zero which is not what i
suspect you want. However you may be able to build on this which looks at A1
to A30 and does what you require i.e. adds 8 hours to the total for work and
subtracts 8 for free

=COUNTIF(A1:A30,"=work")*8-(COUNTIF(A1:A30,"=freetime")*8)
