working without the hide/show sign on word 2003

hi! i tried to work without the sign mark of the end of the line.when i click
on the hide/show button it does' nt desappear.
 
Hi Ajax,

In Tools=>Options=>View do you have any of the inidividual Formatting Marks turned on? If so, those act settings act as overrides
that don't toggle on/off when using the toolbar show/hide icon.
