Show/Hide button

My show/hide button will not toggle. In other words, everything show. When
I click on the show/hide button, everything STILL shows. How do I get the
show/hide button to toggle again. Thank you!

It's possible that each of the checkboxes in the Options > View area
(in different places in different versions of Word) is checked. The
Hide button doesn't override those selections.
