Working with files

I have Windows XP Home Edition. Whenever I open a file I
get a message in the lower left corner of the screen that
says "running virus scan." The scan takes about 30
seconds and is activated with every file, regardless of
how many times I open it in a day. As you can imagine,
this is very annoying. I haven't received any responses to
my queries to Symantec or Microsoft. Maybe someone out
there can help.

Thanks,

Nora

Have you tried looking in the Preferences (or similar) in Symantec?

This should be an issue with Symantec software. If they can not help,
you may want to deinstall the software and use a good virus scanner
instead.
