working with a large database

I am playing with 2+Mil records (data dump from a distant SQL database)
and some of my reports are taking 5 or more minutes to simply save.
Would I see difference in saving if the main data table was in a
seperate/linked file?
 
Are you saying that you haven't split the database, so that the reports and
data are in the same MDB file?

Yes, splitting would definitely have an impact: Access saves the entire
database, not just the new object.
