Working on Someone Elses Site

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if you can help me. I have been asked to do some work on a website
that was set up via frontpage. The website creator has provided me with a
username and password, but I can't seem to access the site. I am stuck at
the very basic initial stage of getting to the webpage from frontpage and
being presented with an option to add a username or password. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Hi Tom,

I know I sound like a complete idiot, but I have literally been trying
allsorts - I have tried the 'New' and the 'Open Site' sections under the File
section of frontpage. Am I some how supposed to add the website to frontpage
before I attempt to access it?

I have been provided with the web site address, username and password. Is
this all I need, along with frontpage.

You didn't say which version of FP you're using. So here goes;
IF the online website has FrontPage Server Extensions installed and working
properly;

Open FP
File | Open Web (or Open Site)
Enter your website URL http://www.yourwebname.com
You'll be prompted for un/pw
Once it opens you have the online "live" site opened locally.
Now;
File | Publish Web (or Site)
and enter a path to where on your local machine you want to publish
to...like:
C:\My Documents\My Webs\anynamehere (you can name your local web anything
you want...Fred, Ethel, Lucy...whatever, but do not include an extension)

Now let FP Publish it to your hardrive

Once done, close your http:// site and open your local website on C:\

You will be working on the C:\ drive copy and when happy with your changes
you'll Publish back up to the server...reverse of what I described above.

Thanks Rob. I have FP2003. When I go to 'Open Site' and enter the site
name, I am not prompted for a username and password. It says that it is not
accessible and provides the options to add a forward/backward slash to the
end of the web url. This does not work though.

You didn't say which version of FP you're using. So here goes;

File | Open Web (or Open Site)
Enter your website URL http://www.yourwebname.com
You'll be prompted for un/pw

Can you possibly contact the original website creator to see how he
accessed the site as published? Did he use FrontPage?

When you see the option to add a user name and/or password did you try
entering the ones he gave you?

I use FrontPage 2002 to keep a website up to date, but I publish using a
separate FTP(file transfer protocol) program that uploads my pages to
the site.

Does the site have FrontPage extensions? Go to
http://www.example.com/_vti_inf.html
where www.example.com is your domain name.
If you get a 404 error (page not found) then there are no FrontPage
extensions, and you cannot open the site with FrontPage.

Otherwise, are you using the correct password? - passwords are CaSe
sensitive.

On trying frontpage again this morning, I have a different situation. When
I go to open the site, it says that I do not have permission to change the
site, but would I like to read it only. There is no option for a username
and password.

Not sure if this will help but on one of the sites I maintain where fpse are
installed, two usernames and passwords are required. One that accesses the
site, and one that allows me to edit with FrontPage.

Don't just put www.whatever.com in there.
