working network, add W98 machine, sees other XP mach, not internet

I have a working network with 3 XP-Pro machines on a router to a DSL
connection. Works great, all can see eachother and the Internet.

Then, I added a Win98SE machine. It works in the intra-net (can see and be
seen, file share, etc. between all machines), but the W98 machine cannot see
the Internet. I have tried "network setup wizzard". I have gone into and
reloaded all the network components. Currently have;
Client for Microsoft Networks,
HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10.100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
NetBEUI (tried with and without this)
TCP/IP
File and printer sharing for MS Networks
Primary login = Client for MS Networks

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Please start by providing ipconfig information for the Win98 computer, and one
of the WinXP computers.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Next, enumerate "the W98 machine cannot see the Internet":
From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.
From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

Interesting munge. But what happens to the legit owner of FMBB AT sbcglobal DOT
net (whether or not that box is in use right now)?

Nice job munging the LAN addresses. Just how I would have done it (and have
IIRC).

All computers with apparently the same DNS server addresses
(dns1.scrmca.sbcglobal.net / dns1.snfcca.sbcglobal.net). Computers 1 - 3 can
access all internet resources with no problem - right? Computer 4 can ping
internet resources by address, but not by name, and can browse by neither name
or number.

Start by looking for LSP / Winsock corruption.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, or WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, a shot.

With Windows 98, you can un install / re install TCP/IP, so that's the next
step, if Winsock repair doesn't do the job.
Un install (in this order, restarting system as necessary):
- Client for MS Networks
- File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks
- NetBEUI (useless for accessing internet resources)
- NetBIOS Over TCP/IP
- TCP/IP
Re install (again, restart system as necessary):
- TCP/IP
- NetBIOS Over TCP/IP
- Client for MS Networks
- File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks

Nice job on your new munge. But who's Ted?

Not sure how I "munged" the LAN addresses, and I don't know the reference to
"Ted".

I reviewed the two links to MS Support and it seemed it wasn't for W98. I
tried the second one, loading an XP tool, but it wouldn't load. So, on to
the cexx.org link. I backed up my registry and ran their program LSPFix.exe
and I'm back on the internet. I also checked to see if I can still see other
machines on my network and I can.

It had some freezing problems thereafter, so I went to
http://support.earthlink.net/mu/1/psc/img/walkthroughs/windows_9x_nt/dialers/dun_1.3/5289.psc.html
and cleaned up in there also.

I'm now downloading and installing updates on the affected machine.

I do appreciate your assistance.

Thanks for the update, Bob. I do hope that the problem was the Winsock, as your
symptoms sort of limit the possible solutions. If that wasn't it, please post
again. Be patient and persistent, and what you learn may help others.

Chuck,

I updated all the Windows Updates, now I have another problem that is quite
the opposite of the other. Now, I have the internet, but I cannot see or
be seen by others on my net.

I looked in the 'Network' in the 'control panel', and didn't have Client for
MS Networks. It took about 5 tries to get it added. It asked for the W98
disk, which I gave, and it seemed to load it then said to reboot. I rebooted
and looked, but Client for MS Networks wasn't there the first few times.
Each time, I can do the internet, but not my internal net.

OK, I used the XP-Pro CD to load the networking tool and now I can see and
be seen. Kinda.

My XP cannot see the C drive in the W98 machine. Mostly because I havent'
alowed sharing. If I remember right, to alow sharing you bring up Windows
Explorer, right click the C drive and go to properties. From there, you go
to Sharing and click..... etc... There is where the next problem resides.

When I right click the C drive, I get an error message that states "This
program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the
problem persists, contact the program vendor." Well, this is Exploring and
it also happens with the window after double clicking "My Computer" and
right clicking the C drive.

After I click "OK", the message appears from MS Internet Explorer, "An error
has occurred in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer will now close. If you
continue to experience problems, please restart your computer." This occurs
all the time. I can right click anything but the drives (one hard drive - C:
and two CD drives).

If I left click on the drive, then click once on a menu item (not File), it
will display what is in the menu. If i move the mouse to other menu titles
(View, Go, Favorites, Help, Edit) it shows what is under them. If I move
the mouse over the "File" menu item, I get the same error messages as above.

Bob,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Win9x problems. So many gripes about
Win2K/XP, but folks seem to forget about Win9x and its idiosyncrasies.

I have never trusted the XP Networking Wizard for just this reason. You're
taking code from a library on one computer, and exporting it to another
computer. Never mind what's already on the second computer - what versions,
patches, etc.

See if Page 39 in this document helps any:

1) Reboot.
2) Un install CMN and FPSMN.
3) Reboot.
4) Install CMN and FPSMN per the document above.

What to do about Internet Explorer? If you must use it (I prefer Firefox), you
may end up reloading it too. At least under Win9x you could un install / re
install it.

One step at a time, Bob.

Chuck, in regards to your comment on IE vs Firefox, I may do that. But, that
isn't where my problem is. I didn't open Internet Explorer, I double clicked
on My Computer or right clicked the Start button and chose Explore. Both of
these windows look like IE, but it is looking at my files. It is when I
right click on the C drive in either of these windows, that I get the error
messages. Left clicking the drive once (highlighting it) and clicking on
File (with the intention of going to properties) also gives the error
message described above. There is no longer any way to get to the
Properties of my hard drive.

Bob,

OK, I think I know what you're talking about.

Are you running Active Desktop? Is this the Windows 98 computer with the
Explorer problem, or the Windows XP computer?

If this is the Win98 computer you're talking about, you will probably get more
help in microsoft.public.win98.shell. If Active Desktop is involved, cross-post
(don't multi-post) to microsoft.public.win98.internet.active_desktop.

If the Windows XP is involved, try microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

There are experts there who know more about the Windows Shell, and Explorer,
than anyone in this group.

Thanks, Chuck, it is in the W98 machine. I have just posted on
microsoft.public.win98.shell which doesn't seem to get much business (I'm
accessing through SBCGlobal). Active Desktop is not active. Just for K&G,
here is the "Details" on the first error message. It is as follows;

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module SHELL32.DLL at 0167:66817cc0.

I appreciate the help you have given me. I'll now wait at the other NG also.

Thanks,

Bob,

That's one of the challenges of an older operating system - less folks using it
means less folks advising how to use it.

My guess is you're going to have to repair the OS. Is it up to date with all
released patches, etc? Once you get it repaired, and patched up to date, lets
try and configure it by hand, rather than using the Windows XP wizard.

All the patches and updates are in. I can get on the Internet from the W98SE
machine and can also see other mancines on my home network. The only problem
I have now, is trying to see the properties of my C drive so I can share it.
