Working around objects and texts

When you insert an object/figure and you type above the object, the object
moves down with the amount of typing done above the object. What I would
like to do is have the object stationnary in the document and the text will
work around the document (ie when i am typing up to the diagram, text will
automatically continue after the diagram, the diagram remains fixed at a
specific point or reference to a specific point).

I am running word 07. Any thoughts how to do this would be greatly
appreciated

You can do this in a slightly limited manner.

After inserting the picture, click the Text Wrapping button in the
Position group and choose any wrapping method except In Line with
Text. Then click the Position button to the left of Text Wrapping, and
choose More Layout Options at the bottom of the gallery. In the
resulting dialog, change the vertical position to be relative to Page
(or Top Margin or Bottom Margin) instead of Paragraph.

If you're satisfied with one of the nine positions shown in the
gallery (top, middle, or bottom on the left, center, or right),
clicking one of them is a shortcut for making the corresponding
settings in the dialog. This method is also subject to the same
limitation.

[Note: You can also get to the Text Wrapping choices by right-clicking
the picture and using the context menu. You can get to the Position
dialog by right-clicking, clicking Text Wrapping, and choosing More
Layout Options from the menu.]

To understand the limitation, you have to know about the idea of an
"anchor". For a floating (i.e., not in-line) picture, the anchor is
the top left corner of the paragraph that contained the insertion
point when you inserted the picture. The rule in Word is that the
picture _must_ always be on the same page as its anchor.

When you set the vertical position to be relative to the page, the
picture won't move as the anchor paragraph moves up and down the page,
as long as they're on the same page. If the anchor paragraph moves to
another page because of editing before it, though, the picture will
jump to the same position on the anchor's new page -- it can't stay on
the same page while the anchor goes somewhere else.
