When I connect my laptop to a desktop it takes about 5-10
minutes for the desktop to show up when I browse my
network places\microsoft windows network\workgroup. How
can I speed this up so that I don't have to wait to
browse the desktop from my laptop? The desktop is in
another workgroup but we are in the same IP range. I do
not want to change the desktop over to my workgroup.
Thank you for any replies.

Consider that we ignorant folk cannot see your office, we cannot see your
servers, we cannot know what workgroup names there are, we have no idea how
you logon [DOMAIN, SERVER or PEER-to-PEER].

Now how are we to solve your problem?

You have only pencilled one small detail on the canvass, but haven't painted
the picture.

I connect directly to the desktop with an ethernet cable
(NIC to NIC). The desktop PC is not part of a domain,
just another workgroup. After connecting, my laptop
doesn't even see the desktop pc until after about 5-10
minutes. We both have static IPs in the 192.168.0 range.
Firewalls are off and C drive is shared on both. Also,
both are running XP Pro.

Bill,

So you have two computers in different workgroups, but on the same subnet. So
each computer has a different master browser, and it will take a few minutes for
the two master browsers to discover each other, and to exchange information.
The answer is in here (it's a good read, but a long one):
