Have a new HP Compaq notebook with XP Pro installed which
is replacing a Dell notebook running Millenium. Have a
home workgroup via the standard RJ45 network cable for
access to a host desktop running Win98 Second edition
with an HP deskjet printer which I use for backup and
printing from the notebook when working from home.
Since connecting the new notebook to the workgroup cannot
get access to the desktop shared hard drives or the
printer. HP Compaq support in the UK is virtually useless
as they are not all interested in supporting the MS
product even for new users so have spent hours on the MS
XP Pro knowledgebase and did find some articles related
to workgroups which I have followed to try to correct the
problem but still no access. Ran a hardware diagnostic
which confirmed the LAN hardware is enabled and working
then re-connected my Dell notebook to confirm the cable
and desktop were still good...all okay there so the
problem is clearly something to do with the XP Pro setup.
New notebook sees the home workgroup and the drives and
printer but when I try to access the drives get a
dialogue box titled - "Connect to Brian - Desktop" (my
host system name). Has a task line saying "Connecting to
Brian - Desktop" then two fields. First one is "Username"
which is greyed out but has "Brian - Desktop\Guest in it.
Second one is "Password" which is open and empty. Tried
various password options plus no entry before enter and
also tried cancel direct but no joy on any.
Any help much appreciated.
