Workgroup & NTFS Permissions - Remote Network Workstation Access E

Problem:

Two XP Boxes located in workgroup. (no domain server)
Both with NTFS permissions active.
According to KB articles I have read, I can only share folders/files with
“Everybody†group in NTFS security permissions…
Why bother with NNFS permissions then? I can basically do the same thing
with simple file sharing.

I wanted to restrict remote access to folders by using groups (as in Power
User) or even a specific user on ANOTHER pc on the network (workgroup) via
using groups or users.
(I am studying for my MCDST and using as a lab)

So it sound like… with a workgroup…and NTFS permissions enabled you can not:
Assign a group ie, Power Users access to a folder and have a Power User
on a “remote†PC have access to it. You have to use the Everyone group… and
that pretty much lets everyone have the same permissions…and does not solve
my problem… of sharing folders for specific other users on the network.

I must be doing something wrong… surly there is a way to restrict shared
folders to specific users on a workgroup network.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Mark:)

Well, with classic file sharing - which I take it is what you mean by "NTFS
permissions active" - in a workgroup environment, you cannot add users from
some machine to a group created on some other machine. However, you can
achieve pretty much the same result by creating duplicate accounts/passwords
on both machines.
