workgroup not visible

I have been through these files and all troubleshooting before coming here,
but nothing is exactly like the problem I am having and the solutions haven't
worked. I bought a new computer and have been trying for 2 days to get it
"online" with my home network. online isn't actually the problem, because I
can get online--but I can't get either computer to acknowledge the other when
it comes to file/printer sharing. I had a home network set up previously, and
simply changed out an older comp with this new one. other than it being new,
there are no differences--I installed the same virus and firewall (norton AV
& zonealarm pro, win firewall is off) as on the other one and walked through
the home network setup. no good.

at one point I could "see" the other computer in either's workgroup screen
but couldn't access. now I can't even see them and get this message... "HOME
is not accessible. you may not have permission to use this network. check
with admin. the list of servers for this workgroup is not available".

I have tried changing the names of the computers, disabling firewalls and
AV, rerunning network setup, I changed the name of the workgroup--everything
that I could think of or that was suggested. what else is there?

I understand amieelynne problems except I've been tying to fix up my home
network for a couple of weeks, since I refomated the family PC. When I try to
view myworkgroup I get a message:

"... is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact adminstrator of this server ..."

I've checked everywhere to see where the problem ... I set up my laptop (the
other componet of our tiny home network) and it seems fine ... I've pinged
the repective computers and thy reply ... I can access the internet from each
unit ... I just can't see the designated workgroup.

AmieeLynne,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall. There are several other possibilities too. Read
this article with an open mind.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

thank you for the advice chuck..I had read those articles linked in a
previous post, I had disabled all firewalls and tweaked everything before
becoming totally stumped and posting here. the problem is resolved
now--though I don't know how! I went to bed last night without a
network...and when I went to the computer this morning I could see the other
computer AND access the files, weird--really weird! there are a couple other
things going on--so maybe there is a problem with this new comp, I'm going to
call thech today and see what's up. everytime I log into windows notepad
opens with this message "[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787"

Well, I'm flattered that you were able to find my websites elsewhere, but sorry
that the solution wasn't available from them. But it's good that the problem
did go away (well, maybe good).

Now, a shell.dll problem is not a network issue. You'll probably get good
advice on that in the General or Help_and_Support forum.
