Workgroup not accessible

Mauricio Diaz

Hi,

I just bought a new D-Link router to share my Internet connection between my
desktop and my laptop.

The desktop is running Win2K Pro and is connected to the router using an
Ethernet cable; the laptop runs WinXP Pro and connects to the router
wirelessly.

I managed to set up the router to share the Internet connection and wanted
to set up file sharing, but I'm having trouble with the XP box.

Currently, both computers belong to the same workgroup and have different
names. They both have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled. They both have Guest
accounts disabled.

The 2K box has no trouble connecting to the workgroup and accessing files in
the XP box. However, the XP box cannot see the 2K box.

When I click on "View workgroup computers" in "My Network Places", I get the
following error:

"[Workgroup] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions."

The network path was not found."

It seems to me that the logical behaviour, if there was problem with the 2K
box, would be for the XP box to show only itself as a member of the
Workgroup, so I think there must be a problem on the XP box.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

Mauricio Diaz

Yes, they're exactly the same... Which is, I think, why the 2K box _can_ see
and access the files in the XP box... What I don't understand is why the XP
box won't even show itself in its own workgroup?

Have you verified that the workgroups are exactly the same on both PCs?

If I shut down the 2K box, the XP box can connect to the workgroup and sees
itself as the only member.

Any ideas of what Win 2K might be doing to prevent XP from connecting? I
haven't changed any security settings in 2K and I'm using identical user
names with identical passwords on both computers.

Check that the boxes have different IP addresses. The last figure should
be different: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, for example. Subnet masks
should be 255.255.255.0.

They do have different addresses (192.168.0.100 and .101). The addresses are
assigned by the router that shares the Internet connection by DHCP...

After shutting down the 2K box, as I described below, the XP box was able to
access the workgroup and see itself as a member. Additionally, when I
restarted the 2K box, its name appeared on the XP box as part of the
workgroup. However, if I try to access it I get the following message:

"\\[2K box name] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

Which is pretty much the same message I get when I can't access the
workgroup at all.

I am "the administrator" and, as I said, I haven't changed any security
settings in Win 2K that would prevent the XP box from accessing it; I even
enabled the Guest account, which was disabled.

Thanks to everybody for their responses so far, and I'm still open to new
ideas and suggestions.

I still haven't figured out why my 2K box doesn't seem to allow my XP box to
connect to the workgroup and access its files...

Does anyone have any idea of any tests I could run to determine what's
wrong? I downloaded and ran Browstat from Microsoft, but I don't really
understant the results.

I have been able to determine that the workgroup's Browser Master is the 2K
box and that the XP box, although it can't access it, does recognize the 2K
box by its name (the computer's name is correctly associated to the IP).

Although I don't really understand what it means, I have also found out that
when listing the transports bound to each computer's browser I get one
single transport from the XP box, but 7 from the 2K box. Could this have
something to do with my problem?

Thanks for your help,

All I have been able to determine so far is that whenever the 2K box is
Browser Master, it will not allow the XP box to access the workgroup. If the
XP box is Browser Master, it can access the workgroup, but it can't access
the files on the 2K box.

I appreciate any ideas you might have on solving this.

Thanks,

I have discovered that using the "net send" command I can successfully send
a message to the 2K box.

Still no idea on why I can't access the domain or the computer?

Thanks,

Hi,

Thanks for the link. I have, theoretically, configured everything as its
described in the documents in that site, however, it still doesn't solve my
problems.

I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at the updates I've posted to see
if you can help me figure out what might be wrong.

Thanks,

MD
