Workgroup network issues (network neighborhood browser and ping)

Hello,

I am having difficulties to set up a simple network between two PCs and a
wireless router to share internet and files.
Both PCs currently have internet connectivity via the router.

Description of the problem (detailed network configuration at the end of the
message):

1) PC1 ("EDOGAWABASHI") is a windows XP PRo multilingal. It can ping itself,
the router and PC2. It can not browse the neighborhood ("maison is
not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource").
Browstat shows that "Browsing is not active on the domain" but i could not
do anything to fix it. I have activated Guest account on both PCs.
The registry HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\RestrictAnonymous is
zero on PC1 and PC2.
Stopping and Starting the "Computer browser" service on PC1 with or without
the firewall does not change anything.

2) PC2 ("EDO-2) is a windows vista Home basic Japanese. It can ping to
itself and to the router but it can not ping to PC1.
PC2 has no third party firewall. Windows firewall is disabled.
PC1 has a norton firewall installed (and windows firewall disabled). ICMP
traffic is fully authorized on the subnet.
PC2 can still not ping PC1 even when PC1 firewall is disabled.

The router is a logitec LAN-WG/R. As far as I could look at its
configuration it has no special filtering or firewall features.

Any idea/help to resolve my problem greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Can you ping each other by IP? If not, make sure not any firewall or security software blocks the ping. If you can the IP, then I would check the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. Or this link may help,

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the reply.

Yes the NetBios over TCP is enabled on all the wireless adaptors.
I am only pinging by IP. I have made attempts to ping with and without the
firewall activated on PC1. Result was the same : PC2 can not ping PC1 but PC1
can ping PC2. PC1 can not see network neighborhood. PC2 can see the network
neighborhood but PC1 is not included in it.

I would double-check the firewall or any security software.

Hello,

For the record, I finally solved my problem. The Checkpoint VPN client was
preventing other networks to access my PC.

By unbinding the driver from the network connection (uncheck the "CheckPoint
Secure Remote" in the properties screen of the network connection), the
problem
has been fixed.

Apparently it is possible to have both my connections work at the same time
but I still need to find a protocol that reliably enable this situation.

Thanks to all for your help.
