Could someone explain to me how Workgroup Information File work? I have built
three databases that I need to setup security. Do I need to create a
Workgroup Information file for each database? These database will be for
multiusers. By joining all these database to the same workgroup information
file will it corrupt the database if all these database are open at the same
time?

Generally, I would use one workgroup for all my secured databases in a
particular environment. I have one secured workgroup in the office that I
use any time I build a database for members of my department. If I were to
create a file for another group that does not typically use our LAN folders,
I'd probably create a brand new workgroup file and give it to them.

Typically you would have one workgroup file for each different group of
users - regardless of how many databases those users accessed via that
workgroup file.

So, if you had people at company A using databases 1, 2 and 3, and
people at company B using databases 2, 3 and 4, you would have
workgroup file #1 (for company A) controlling access to databases 1, 2
and 3 at company A, and workgroup file #2 (for company B) controlling
access to databases 2, 3 and 4 at company B.

Note how a workgroup file can control many databases, and, a database
(eg. 2 above) can be controlled by many different workgroup files.

Could you please explain to me the process of operating a second workgroup
file? I believe I tried that and I wasn't able to open my first database
that I created with a different WIF. So I had to convert back to my first WIF
and join all my other two databases to that WIF. Now I have all these Users
group in my Admin account having access to all the database. I put them in
group account so they all have the different permission I set for that
account. Can I limit one person in a account not to have access to the
database but still be a part of that group or should I remove that person and
place that person in its own account and set a whole differenct permission
for that account?

I hope I am explaining myself clearly.

Sorry, it's a bit beyond the scope of this newsgroup, to provide a full
tutorial on how to use workgroup files. We are all volunteers, and we
have limited time for answering questions. We normally focus on
specific questions that we can answer fairly quickly.

If you're dealing with multiple workgroup files, here are some key
points to understand.

- Each workgroup file has an Admins group.

- The members of that group have special permissions, to all databases
that are created /when that workgroup file is in use/.

- The members of that group do /not/ have any special permissions to
databases that were created when /other/ workgroup files were in use.

How do you know which workgroup file Access will use?

- If you start Access via start : programs, it will use the default
workgroup information file that is defined for that PC;

- If you start it by double-clicking a database file, it will also use
the default workgroup information file that is defined for that PC;

- If you start it via a shortcut that uses the /wrkgrp switch, it will
use the workgroup file selected with that /wrkgrp switch.

You need to carefully read the security FAQ, available from MS
