workgroup files

I'm running Access 2000 under Windows XP Home Edition.

1) I ran wrkgadm.exe and created a new workgroup named "test.mdw" in a
shared directory.

2) I created a user in the admins group and after logging as that user I
assigned a password to that new user.

3) I put a password on the Admin user and took the admin user out of the
admins group.

As expected the login dialog box comes up and I can login with the username
and password.

what I don't understand is after running the workgroup administrator again
and joining the original default workgroup I still am forced to log in no
matter what database I try to open. Also, there are 3 mdw files: the new one
I created in the shared directory, one in an office sub-directory and one in
windows\system32. While the current workgroup was the new one in the shared
directory it seems like the mdw file in the office sub-directory was updated
( based on the file timestamp ).

It appears that when I create a user the user is part of all 3 workgroup
files.

thanks

Hi, Allan.
what I don't understand is after running the workgroup administrator again
and joining the original default workgroup I still am forced to log in no
matter what database I try to open.

This is because the default workgroup for the version of Access that you are
currently using now has a password assigned to the Admin user. When you
remove this password, you will no longer be prompted for the User ID and
password when opening any database in this version of Access.
matter what database I try to open. Also, there are 3 mdw files: the new one
I created in the shared directory, one in an office sub-directory and one in
windows\system32.

Use the System.MDW workgroup file in C:\Windows\System32 and remove the
Admin user's password, and you won't be prompted for a User ID and password
every time you use Access to open a database.
While the current workgroup was the new one in the shared
directory it seems like the mdw file in the office sub-directory was updated
( based on the file timestamp ).

It's easier to keep track of which workgroup is which when the names of the
files are different. For example, the default workgroup is System.MDW, a
secure workgroup is Secure.MDW, and the test workgroup is TestSecure.MDW.
It appears that when I create a user the user is part of all 3 workgroup
files.

One can only join one workgroup at a time. Creating a user while joined to
a certain workgroup will create this user only in the current workgroup.
The other workgroups will not be affected, since they were not involved in
this user creation. In order to have the same user listed in more than one
workgroup, one would need to either join each of the other workgroups in
turn to create an identical user name in that workgroup, or else copy the
workgroup file to another location after this user was created.

HTH.
