Workgroup & Domain together

I have a laptop that I use at work and I use the domain name "XYZ" The
laptop is setup to use a domain.

I also have a two home computers that are connected to a wireless router.
Since I don't have a server, I have setup the two home computers to have the
workgroup name of "XYZ". My problem comes in when I try to connect to the
home computers from my laptop. I can see the computers in the Windows
Explorer, but when I got to connect to them it ask me for a username and
password. I enter a correct username and password, but the prompt for a
username and password just continues to display. I have added the sames
users to each of the computers with the same passwords.

One home computer is running XP Pro, one is running XP home and the laptop
is running XP Pro. The router is functioning properly because I am able to
share the internet through the router with all the computers.

Any ideas on why I can't connect the computers?

Thanks in advance!

sounds like cached credentials issue. try this logon all computers using the
same name and password, can you browse each other? If not, what do you get
if using net view \\remotepcname?

Couple of options:

1. Go to a command prompt and type

net use x: \\computername\share /user:computername\username <enter>
& enter your password when prompted.
or

2. Go to Windows Explorer and go to tools, map network drive, find the
computer\share, and connect as another user.

I tried all that but it just keeps asking me for a username and password and
never connects.

When I do the net view \\pcname , I get this:

System error 5 has occured.

Access is denied.

I have temporarily disable all the firewalls, etc for both computers. When I
try to logon through Windows Explorer it tells me that there is no domain
controller to authenticate or something like that.

Any more help?

Jason

system error 5 is permission issue.

Yeah, I found that, but I am trying to log in with the same user name and
password on both computers.

I found that in the event viewer it says that it can't find the domain
controller to verify the username and password, but the home computer that I
am trying to connect to is on a workgroup, not a domain.

Any suggestions?

Jason,

For the computer running XP Home, you'll have to enable the Guest account - type
"net user guest /active:yes" in a command window.

For the computer running XP Pro, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control
Panel - Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With
XP Pro, you need to have SFS properly set on each computer.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the above Local Security Policy to "Guest only", enable
the Guest account - type "net user guest /active:yes" in a command window.

More about file sharing, between all different versions of Windows:
