Workbook size

Could you tell me why my workbook size gets bigger when I delete data?
I have a work book that is 8.21 MB. I cleaned it out to start over and took
out all the data. None of the formula's and it increased to 9.51 MB.
If I delete the tab that has most of the formula's on it, which is mostly
adding a columns and linking to another sheet the workbook goes down to 1.7
MB.
How do I get this smaller so it performs quicker?

Thanks
dpal

Go to one sheet. Find the cell (last column and last row) that you know to
be the last used cell in that sheet. Note that cell address. Now do Ctrl -
End. That will take you to what Excel thinks is the last used cell. The
used range is a large factor in file size. If your last cell and Excel's
last cell are far apart, that could be your problem. Delete all the rows
below and all the columns to the right of YOUR last cell. Do this for every
sheet in the file. Save the file. Close the file. Open the file. Does
this help? HTH Otto

Thanks I tried this but it is still the same size and it still returns back
the the same cell when I hit "Ctl End"

Did you SAVE after deleting blank rows and columns?

Delete....do not just "clear contents"

Are you saying that Excel's last cell and your last cell are different and
you deleted all the rows and columns like I said and Ctrl-End still gave you
Excel's last cell? If so, you didn't delete the rows/columns or you didn't
save and close the file. If your last cell is, say, G100, select row 101.
Not a cell in row 101, the whole row. Click on the row number 101. Then do
Shift-Ctrl-Down Arrow. This selects all the rows from 101 down. Put your
cursor in the colored area, right-click and select delete. Then select
Column H. The Column, not a cell. Do Shift-Ctrl-Right Arrow. Right-click
and select Delete. Save and close the file. Open the file. Check the size
of the file. Otto
