workbook opens as system file

when I receive a workbook via email and try and open it, it does not
open excel but a system file. Any idea why this would happen?
 
What is the file name format of the file that is being sent? Is the file *.xls?
How are your normal excel files named?

Have you tried saving to disk and opening via within Excel?

file format is *.xls. all other workbooks have the .xls extension. I
have tried to save it but I get an error. The error message gives no
code but simply reads "File could not be saved" and that is it. It is
just this one workbookthat I have problems with. If the workbook is
fowarded to me by someone else on the distribution list the workbook
will open fine.
 
What's the name of the file?

Just a guess, but could it be encroaching on one of the DOS device names (LPT1,
PRN, CON, NUL...)?
