WordXp - filtered html destroys relative links!?

For maximum compatibility Word is set to Word97, IE4
compatibility, and xml is not desired in saved files. Am
trying to edit existing web files downloaded to my pc. For
example, "index.html" includes a logo in the
subfolder "images". Opening "index.htlm" in Word finds and
displays the image just hunky-dory.

Is there any way to avoid Word messing with the carefully
crafted relative links to graphics? The html files
already have ...src="Images\Logo2.gif"... and word insists
on changing this
to ...src="file:///C:\TEMP\Images\Logo2.gif"... even when
the edits had nothing to do with the graphics.
This will break the website when copied back to the non-
microsoft (gasp) web server.

Also, when opening an existing htm file, editing and
saving as filtered html, Word refuses to leave the
supporting files alone and sez "The folder that this Web
page would use to organize supporting files is already
reserved for use in the current location." Well, of
course, they didn't change and I want them to keep their
relative names.

Is there a simple way to understand this? Thankyou.

It seems to have something to do with the filename:
index.html - when I rename it to index to index.htm before
opening it with Word, the bad behavior does NOT happen.
