If I have a list saved to a document and later want to add more to the list
is there a way to have it automatically put the list into alphabetical order
or do I have to just insert the new items in the correct places. Microsoft
Word had a sort button that did it for me but I am not familiar with Wordpad.

I assume that you were using tables in MS Word.

Wordpad does not have ability to create or use tables, so no sort function.

To add to Wes's answer, WordPad is really just a glorified text editor, not
a full-featured word-proceesor. If you need the features of a real word
processor, you should acquire one like Word, WordPerfect, StarOffice, or the
freeware OpenOffice.

if there's any sorting avail, you can usually find a button the a-z or z-a
Wordpad is limited. But if you initiate it's help and search for sorting,
then the instructions will be provided - if the option to sort is avail.

If you don't have word installed, maybe you can download the MSOffice beta
software for free til Jan2007. Its avail via microsoft.com

Also, there is an open source version/clone avail by Sun and free too. I
think its avail at a number of freeware sites like filehippo.com
