I have .wri file. It can be opened properly with wordpad.exe before KB885836
is installed, and displays properly with proper font. After installing
KB885836 (critical
security patch), workpad can still open it properly, but displays with
garbage
characters in the first and last parts of documents.

MS word can open and display this file properly without anyproblem.

Has anyone encountered this problem ?

This problematic .wri (xvi.wri) can be found inside the
http://www.ataman.com/freebies/xvi-i.zip

Any clue ?

Thanks in advance,

John

Do you have an OEM machine (HP, Compaq, etc.)? I seem to recall that HP
had a patch for problems with Wordpad.

Malke

Nope. I had the same problem on several machines. All of them just got
automatically updated through windows update. The wordpad.exe is dated
10/28/2004.

If uninstalling KB885836, the original wordpad.exe, dated 08/29/2002, is
restored, and it works fine.

It doesn't display correctly in Win2K WordPad w/KB885836 installed.

Glad you mentioned that. It just happened to me about a half hour ago! I
just spaced it off as the file being corrupt. After I read your post I went
back and viewed it with Word and it looked fine.

Wordpad is not supposed to handle true .wri files from the very old
'Windows write'. Are these some other format - eg rtf - which someone
has saved with a wri extension? If so, it *might* work if in Internet
Options - Security you select to open files based on Content rather than
extension. But I don't hold out much hope. Or rename to an extension
that matches the format

Word does handle the old Windows Write's .wri files; wordpad does not

That is the funniest argument I've never seen.

Windows XP/2000 does associate .wri file with wordpad. There is also a wrapper
program called write.exe to wordpad.exe under /windows/system32 which can
open .wri file.

Open a cmd prompt, just type in xvi.wri. You will see which application will
open
the file.

In fact, before KB885836, wordpad.exe does open this .wri file correctly.
After KB885836, it regresses. In simple point, KB885836 does introduce a
regression.

John

Does write.exe (a wrapper to wordpad.exe) support .wri file ?

Please remember, wordpad.exe does open .wri file correctly before KB885836.
Everyone does software development knows this is a regression.
