Wordpad has taken over Notepad

Hi,

The only way I can get Notepad to open a .txt is if I launch Notepad and do
file\open.

If I double click a .txt, Wordpad always opens it. Even if I right click
on a .txt, then open with, always, and browse to Notepad, it still opens
with Wordpad.

Why is this?

Sincerely,
Bruce

1. Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types
2. Scroll down until you see TXT in the list. Select it and
then click the change button. Select Notepad from the list
and click Ok all the way out. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply.

When I do as you suggest, and get select TXT, the message in the box is:

Opens with Wordpad
You have customized files with the extension TXT. To restore these files
to their default type (Text document), click Restore.

I didn't click Restore, but clicked Change, which gives me the Open With
box. Notepad is not avaliable in the list, and the always use choice is
not enabled. If I browse to Notepad (C:\window\notepad.exe), and select
it, and then ok my way out, there is no change.

I don't know why I'm told that I have 'customized' files with the
extension TXT, but I will search for all the .txt files and see what they
contain before I go the Restore method.

I compared the described problem above with another machine at work.
Here's the problem.

Notepad is not an available selection in Open With on my machine at home.
How do I make it so that it is?

Sincerely
Bruce

Solved.

Notepad.exe was not located in system root\system32, as I found out it
should be by looking at HKCR\txtfile\shell\open\command. The data value
there was %System Root\System32\notepad.exe%1.

It was only in system root, so I made a copy and placed it in the
System32, and all is well. It now shows up on the 'Open With' applet.
