Before XP, I was able to save a Wordpad file as a .doc file. In fact it was the default file type. (And yes, then after creation, opening that file automatically opened it in Word.) I was happy then. :

I don't want to associate all my .doc files with WordPad, I simply want the option in Wordpad. How do I add this to the dropdown list in the Save As screen?

As an alternative, have you tried .rtf ?

Do you have Word installed? If yes, then it took over the control of the
".DOC" file type.

I don't want to save an rtf file. And the default program for that will be WordPad

And Word is and was loaded on the XP machine...and always was on all my other systems.

I believe this is something new in XP and the MS folks have stolen functionality from us yet again! (The desktop shortcut to my floppy drive STILL does not work!!!
