If all else fails in Word, close Word, find Normal.dot and rename it to
NormalOld.dot. When you re-open Word a new Normal.dot is created.

Is the menu bar still absent if you shrink the window ie has it disappeared
off the top of the screen?

Go to Tools, Customise and check if the Menu Bar is ticked.on the Toolbars
page.

BTW which version of Office do you have? If you have no joy here then you
may like to try the microsoft.public Office group for your version in Google
groups.
