Word XP: Cannot open multiple windows

I'm banging my head against a wall over here. When I try
to open a second doc in Word, it opens it in the same
window (similar to what Word 97 did). I need it to open
in a new instance of Word so I can Tab between my
documents. Any ideas as to why this is occurring?

Also, all my imported links are showing up with a grey
background. Why is that?

By default Word 2002 opens a new window for each document. You can switch
between then with ALT+Tab like any other windows - but see Doug's reply.

This would suggest that you have field shading set to be always on - tools >
options > view > field shading. - change it to 'when selected'.
