Word wrap problem - Merged cells

H

Helen

Good day,

Excel 2003, XP.

This is weird. I have merged 5 cells, typed in 324 words (1,884 characters
without space and 2,204 with space). This text is separated into 4
paragraphs.

Word wrap is activated.

The two last paragraphs do not fit in the cell. The last 5 words or so of
each line of these two paragraphs are exceeding the cell.

Try as I might, I cannot correct this unless I manually put in a couple of
Alt+Returns, which, to my knowledge, I shouldn't have to do since I did not
have to do it in the first two paragraphs.

Any idea why I have this problem? And I get this problem all the time.

Thanks!

Helen, I encountered exactly the same problem on the same platform Excel
2003-WindowsXP. This is utterly weird. I had three merged cells and 2010
characters (with spaces) and 13 carriage returns. I then tried putting
everything in one cell with row height set to maximum (409) but the problem
still persisted. I noticed that text wrapping stops functioning after 1061
characters (with spaces). That's again very strange and contrary to what's in
Wikianswers
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_characters_can_a_single_cell_contain_in_Microsoft_Excel
, the maximum characters can be seen in a cell is 1024. Well, in the end I
had to do the same - to fit in all text using ALT-Enter...very impractical
solution though. While looking for answers in the web for this problem, I
found out that there are many people out there frustrated by this word
wrapping issue in Excel and it's there since as long as 2005. Shouldn't it be
resolved by now???
