Word won't let me use documents, and saves unwanted ones

I am transcribing cemeteries. Word keeps telling me that
someone else is using the document. I then have to make
another copy in order to make changes.

I work on the desktop, but also backup to either a floppy
or a zip disc. I have several documents with .tmp on the
desktop and I cannot get rid of them.

What is my problem?

Your problem is orphaned temp files - see

Delete the temps from the desktop immediately following a reboot.
