thanks for the wonderful info, but that link addresses how to enter safe
mode, not exit.

And the juicy link, "WD2002: About Office Safe Mode in Word" comes up with
"The Knowledge Base (KB) Article You Requested Is Currently Not Available"

the questions remains, how do I get out of safe mode, if word won't resolve
it on its' own?

If you actually read the article, instead of summarily dismissing it as
being not applicable to your issue, you would see that the article tells
you what to do if you can start Word in safe mode but not in normal
mode. The article suggests renaming the Normal.dot template, moving or
renaming files in your Word startup folder, renaming Word's data key,
and trying a different printer driver.

Thank you for pointing out that the "About Safe Mode in Word" link
