Word Templates

I've downloaded a word template (e.g. Thanksgiving Recipe Card) but would
like to make changes to it, removing lines, etc. Is there a way to ungroup
the objects and then only use one part of the template?

I'm more familiar with Microsoft Publisher and haven't figured out how to do
this in Word.

If it's something you've downloaded there may be issues with changing it and
it may be protected but, in general, to edit a template you need to open it
for editing. The default action on double-clicking is to base a new document
on the template; if, instead, you right click and select Open you will then
be able to edit it.

To ungroup drawing objects in Word, right-click on the group and choose the
appropriate command.

Thank you. By right-clicking I was able to delete text boxes and make
changes. That was what I needed for a first step.

But then I am unable to ungroup the pictures. Am I right to assume that
there is no way to ungroup certain portions of a graphic, even though you can
see it is in two parts? Do I need to export the graphic to another program
to ungroup it?

Yes, if then. Word is not a graphics manipulation program. Often graphics
are saved in flat format rather than grouped, though.
