Word takes mintues to open some documents.

Using a variety of XP and 2003 server over a network certain word2003 files takes ages to load and word shows not responding then eventually shows the doccie. can you offer any help? Files vary in size.

This can happen when the template attached to the document has been moved or
deleted. If you were not connected to the network, Word would just look on
your HD for the template, not find it, shrug its shoulders, and open the
document without it. With the whole network to search, it takes longer to
give up. There is no really easy solution for this problem; for any given
file, you can (a) reattach the template in its new location (if it's been
moved), (b) attach a different (existing) template, being sure not to enable
"Automotically update document styles," or (c) create a dummy template with
the same name in the old location.

This can also happen if you have an antivirus program that is set up to scan *.doc files when those files are executed. You might want to try disabling your AV software temporarily to see if the problem disappears. If it goes away, you know the culprit is your AV software. You can then check with them to see if they have a solution. (Most do.)
