Word stopped allowing me to highlight and delete a word. Why?

MS Word 2003 has stopped allowing me to highlight and delete a word or group
or words from my documents. What have I set wrong and how can I fix it?

If the problem is with deleting using the Delete key, then go to the General
tab of Tools | Options and clear the check boxes for both items that refer
to WordPerfect. If it is Backspace that isn't working, then check "Typing
replaces selection" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.
