Word Startup Folder - Templates

M

Moe Szyslak

I am not sure which group that this should be posted in so I decided to
cross post it.

I have a template that I have created, which has macros, styles and font
sizes. I have placed this in the STARTUP folder in the Microsoft Office
Directory. but when you run word, the styles do not drop down in the menu
from the formatting toolbar, the deault font size is not set.

If you remove the template from the STARTUP folder and move it to another
folder and double click on it, the styles appear in the drop down menu on
the formatting toolbar, the default font size is correct.

How can i accomplish all this with out renaming the template to 'normal.dot'
or with out users double-click the template, it will just create a new
document based on the template's found in the STARTUP folder.

We are using Word 97 SR-2

Thanks

Templates placed in the Startup folder are global templates. They make
macros, toolbars, and AutoText available to all documents--but not styles or
document formatting, which is reserved for document templates (see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/WhatTemplatesStore.htm). You can
store a document template in the user templates folder, where users can
select it and base new documents on it. If you want Word to start with a
document based on your document template, you can accomplish that in several
ways. What you can't do is make your document template replace Normal.dot
(and you *don't* want to customize Normal.dot to serve as a template for a
specific kind of document, either).

Are the users pointing at the right startup directory?
ie Tools->Options->File Locations
Check out where the "StartUp" directory is pointing (select "StartUp" and
click "Modify" to get the full path and change it if necessary).
