Word should let me turn off confirm delete block

In Word 2003 it is very inefficient that I need to confirm when I want to
delete a block of text. I would like to turn this off so that I can simply
highlight an area and press delete and the text will be gone.

You can. Tools | Options | General and deselect the two WordPerfect options.
That should do the trick for you.

As has been posted here several times (this one from Doug Robbins only 10
days ago):

From the Tools menu, select Options and go to the General tab and uncheck
both of the items that make a reference to WordPerfect.

Thank you both very much. I searched all over the help menu and knowledge
base etc trying to find this...

Glad to help out. (I'm usually on the receiving end! 8>) )
I like to use Google Groups. In this case, if you restricted your search to
newsgroups dealing with Word using "*word*" and search for "confirm block
delete", you'll get a bunch of hits.
