Using XP on my notebook computer, Word is balking, self-
selecting pull-down menus, and typing text ("the the the,
but but but"). Do I need to uninstall and reinstall
Word? If so, how do I do it?

You need to run a virus scan and clean the dirt out of the
sticky keys on the keyboard.

With Word closed, delete "normal.dot". When you reopen Word, it will
recreate this file. Did that solve your problem? If not, repost in a MS
Office newsgroup. Here is a link to a listing of MS newsgroups:

Thanks for the response. I have already run a virus
scan, and I have all but ruled out the keyboard (the
keyboard works fine for browser/web-based applications;
I'm only having problems with client-based applications
such as Word, Excel, Outlook Express and PowerPoint).

Is speech recognition turned on?

Bingo! I turned it off, and I have not experienced any
of the problems that I had previously. Many thanks for
your help.
