Word Program Lost

My brother has a computer that had windows XP Home edition installed. My
daughter installed a trial version of Office 2007 in order to create a
Powerpoint. When the trial version Office was uninstalled it apparently
removed all Word programs and converted the existing word files to Wordpad.
My brother is unable to open and read these files. Is there any way to get
the original word program back and if so will it automatically convert
Wordpad files back to Word?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated and may save a family crisis.
Thank you.

If you have the Word CD, reinstall the program. If not, try the free
http://openoffice.org install. Whatever software you install, it should
associate itself with the .doc files automatically. If not, use the
Start Menu's "Set program access and defaults" to associate the
different file types with Word, OO, or whatever you install.

It didn't convert the files, it just changed the program used to open
them, since Word is no longer available, DOC file types are now opened
with Wordpad.

If you had Word installed, it sounds like it needs to be installed
again. If you don't have the original install CD, you could download
Open Office to open the DOC files, since it's free.

Confirm that Word is really gone: search the C:\ drive for Winword.exe

If Word really was deleted, then it will have to be re-installed. Even
if the computer was bought with Word pre-installed, you should have
received a Word CD with the computer.

What happens when you double-click on your brother's pre-existing Word
files? In general, WordPad can open *.doc files created in MS Word
unless they are very large or use complex formatting. Please be
specific and report error messages verbatim.

1. Installing WORD will not help with POWERPOINT in the slightest.
Did you perhaps mean OFFICE?

2. OFFICE has nothing to do with the XP OS. Ask in an OFFICE group.

Bye now.
