i have just installed microsoft xp home edition,can you
do spredsheets and typeword programmes like microsoft
words/ or do i have to install another program

You will probably need another program.
All XP has is Wordpad wordprocessor, in
Programs
Accessories
WordPad

XP comes with notepad and wordpad. Both are simple word processors. If you
need advanced word processing then you'll have to buy and install MS
word/excel or another third party app. Open office is a free alternative as

No version of Windows has ever included a spreadsheet program, a
word processor, or any other significant application software. If
you want these you need to buy them.

Perhaps I have misunderstood either the question or the

replys, or both; but Windows XP Home contains Word, Word-
Pad and Notepad (the latter two are in Accessories) and
also spreadsheet and database software under Works Task
Launcher. If you have a microphone, or headset, you can
also use Windows Voice Recognition in Word; but even after
you have trained both you and the computer to recognize
your voice, some of the things you say will be hilarious
when they hit the screen. There are of course, better
voice recognition, word processing and financial data
systems available, but the ones that come with Windows XP
are free.

Word processing:
Wordpad: included. Basic.
OpenOffice: Free for download. Openoffice.org.
Word: Must purchase seperately or as part of MS Office.
Works: Integrated package.
WordPro: Despite the name, unrelated to Word. Purchase from Lotus.
WordPerfect: Also unrelated. Purchase from Wordperfect, or as part of
WordPerfect Office.

Spreadsheets:
Included: nothing.
OpenOffice - again
Excel - Seperate, or part of MS Office.
Works - again.
Lotus 1-2-3 = seperate purchae.
Quattro Pro - Seperate purchase (my favourite for a while.)

No, windows does not include word, excel, or works. Those are separate apss
that need to be purchased and installed. An oem computer may come bundled
with one of these programs, but that is simply and extra installed by the
oem. They are not part of windows xp, or any version of windows.

No, I'm afraid that what you've misunderstood is what comes with
Windows vs what your hardware vendor bundled with the machine he
sold you. Neither Word, nor Works comes with any version of
Windows XP.

If you want to call Windows Write and Wordpad word processors,
you may do that. As far as I'm concerned, neither qualifies for
that term. they are nothing more than glorified text editors.
