Noticed that I lost 99% of my file when I saved it. Also, tried to copy the file I recreated and could not paste it to any program.
I have other files that I created and they seem ok. This happenes every once in awhile.

I'm sorry, but you haven't provided a clear enough description of your
problem. If this only happens once in a while, then you are probably
not saving correctly. If you are positive that you are saving correctly
and not overwriting a file with one containing less data, then your
computer has more fundamental problems. Random failures usually
indicate bad hardware. Run a hard drive diagnostic utility which you
can download from the drive mftr.'s website. Otherwise, please repost
with more information about your system, the problem, and what you've
done to troubleshoot.

Cheers,

Malke

Hi Malke
Thank you for your reply
I have been using word pad for a long time. Since I got this new computer I have been having problems with saving my doc files. I do remember losing info in doc files in my Windows 98 Word Pad. But I assumed it was a memory problem. Now I have a lot of memory
When I create a file I save as, to name it. Now the second time I open the file and work on it, I save it and then close. When I go to open it again only 1% is there. All my work is gone. So I redid the file and saved it by going to file and save. I also tried to save it as a backup to a different location. Now the file is being read from that location.
While I had the file open I checked to see the size of the file and was surprised that nothing was saved. So I tried to copy the file to a new file and it would not copy. I tried several locations. Even tried to copy it to a new e-mail message. Which always works. Never had a problem with copy and paste before.
Also, when I save a file I always use doc even if the type shows rft. You cannot change type to doc from the template that comes up
Now I have used other files and they seem to be alright. Will try again today to recreate that file
Sorry for being so long. Hope this explains it

That's ok that you were long. Here's the thing: if you were having the
same problem on an entirely different computer, using an entirely
different operating system (Windows 98), then I have to say that the
problem lies either in 1) the way you were saving; 2) or possible
limitations of WordPad with which I'm not familiar. WordPad is a very
basic word processor, just a step up from the simple text editor
NotePad. Perhaps you were writig very long documents? I just don't
know. I've never used WordPad for anything except very little notes;
I've always used a real word processor such as MS Word or OpenOffice
Writer. If the problem is solved, that's great, but if it recurs, I'd
suggest posting in an Office newsgroup because I don't think your
problem is related to the operating system you're using but rather to
WordPad.

Good luck,

Malke

Thanks Malke

I just recreated the file but this time I saved it in text format instead of rif. Then I copied it to my e-mail. Also, I saved it as doc. Now I will see what happened. I will copy a back up to my e-mail. I save these in my draft folder and delete when I make a new back up. Just for awhile till I can figure this out
My files are long sometimes 175K or higher. Will check out the office group. Also, found away to check for errors on the hard drive. Will run that
