I am teaching a seniors computer class. Using wordpad because its very
basic. However, when I open a saved wordpad document, it automatically opens
in word. How do I stop this. I am using windows vista, and I have Office
2007 on my computers.

I don't think the Vista version of WordPad can open .doc files anymore.

Can you right click it and use "Open with ..."?

or right click the txt file and click properties and in the general tab just
below the file name and icon is the box for type of file and what to open
with. Click change and select your choice application.

This should change all like file types.

Hi Brenda,

Right click the file>Open With>Choose Default Program.
OR
Control Panel>Default Programs.

"In Windows Vista, support for reading Word files was removed because of the
incorrect rendering and formatting problems. However, it supports speech
recognition and the Text Services Framework (TSF). For viewing legacy
(97-2003) as well as newer (Open XML) Microsoft Word documents, Microsoft
recommends Word Viewer, which is available for free."

I just tested. Make sure you are saving them as .rtf files, rather than
..doc files, as the Vista version of WordPad no longer opens .doc files.

The files were created with WordPad, not Word.

Hi, thank you. Your advice worked. I changed the default program to word
pad and now my wordpad documents, which are saved as RTF files, are opening
back up in word pad.
