word or excel problem

Whenever I try to open Excel saved program, either from a Floppy or from the
Desktop Icon, my computer instantly opens Word, with a pop up box stating
that: file needs to be opened by Microsoft Excel Worksheet Text Converter,
which doesn't help.
No problem if I use Start> Excel Button, or use Windows Explorer, any
suggestions!

Click My Computer, click Tools -> Folder Options. Press the "File Types"
tab. In the "Registered File Types" list, scroll down to XLS. Click on
it. The box below should read:

"Details for 'XLS' extension
Opens with: Microsoft Excel for Windows
Files with extension "XLS' are of type 'Microsoft Excel Worksheet'. To
change settings that affect all 'Microsoft Excel Worksheet' files, click
Advanced."

If it does NOT look like this, then this is your problem. Click the
"Change..." button and choose "Microsoft Excel for Windows" in the list.
