Word opens as .dot from template

If I open a template (located on a network drive) through Word it opens as a
read-only .dot. If I open it by navigating through Explorer and click
directly on the .dot it opens as a Word doc.

I went into tools>>options but I can't seem to pinpoint what the issue is.

If you open a template, you are opening it for editing. When you
double-click it in Explorer, the default action is New (to create a new
document based on the template), which is the same thing that happens when
you select a template in Word's File New dialog.
